September is National Preparedness Month, and after walking through countless homes, I’ve seen my share of “emergency kits” that could use a little help.

The good news? You don’t need a bunker or a generator. You just need your stuff organized enough that you can grab it and go.

Emergency Prep Step #1: Map it!

First, focus on your exits and pathways. Hallways, stairwells, and doorways can easily become storage spots for shoes, boxes, and ongoing projects. Keeping these areas clear is one of the most important safety steps you can take.

Ensure you can easily reach your circuit breaker, main water shut-off, and gas meter without shifting heavy containers.

Emergency Prep Step #2: Get the Go-Bag

Next, assemble a dedicated go-bag for each family member and pet. Place these near your primary exit, and label them clearly.

Include essential items such as daily medications, spare glasses, phone chargers, a change of clothes, cash, duplicate keys, and basic pet supplies. Group these items in labeled pouches or plastic bags to keep everything organized, and check expiration dates every 6 to 12 months to ensure items remain usable.

Emergency Prep Step #3: Critical Information

It is also vital to consolidate your critical documents into a single portable, fireproof, and waterproof container. Gather your personal identification, property deeds, insurance policies, financial account details, medical histories, and emergency contacts.

Creating encrypted digital copies on a thumb drive or secure cloud service provides an extra layer of protection.

Yeah, it sounds like a lot. But I’ve helped clients pull this together in one afternoon.

Emergency Prep Step #4: The Walk-Through

To protect your property investments, take a few minutes to record a visual home inventory. Walk through your home with a phone camera, opening closets and drawers while noting valuable items and serial numbers.

Save this file alongside your vital documents.

Emergency Prep Step #5: Annual Review

Setting an annual reminder each September allows you to review your system, swap out old supplies, and ensure everyone in your household knows the plan.

Organizing your home cannot prevent an unexpected event, but it eliminates unnecessary stress when quick decisions matter most.

Want a hand getting it set up? That’s what I’m here for. As a professional organizer serving St. Charles and St. Louis, I’ll help you make a plan that fits your home.
